Albums > Faith & Superstition > Lyrics > Track 5. Drip
Sometimes in church, singing a worship song, I stumble over a line or a concept; one such was the plea ‘make my flesh life melt away’. What would a melted flesh life result in?.... I know what the writer meant, but it is perilously close to the old heretical idea that only spirit is good and flesh is bad, which still occasionally surfaces – that is what I am having ago at here..
I have a soul, my soul aspires
To worship with the heavenly choirs
But I have a body, a body as well
That locks my soul inside a cell
The body’s fleshly appetites
Make it toss and turn through sleepless nights
Inside the body with soul will say
Lord make this flesh life melt away
(make it go)
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
… ‘til it’s just a pink puddle on the floor
We all have souls, our souls are saying
Free us from the fat, flabby, ageing and decaying
It would be so much easier to be ethereal
Bright,shiny, hovering, immaterial
Now we know soul and body will one day separate
But that's all a bit sudden and all a bit late
There'd be much less pain if we all could see
Those flesh lives liquefy gradually
(let them go...)
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
Drip drip drip drip drip drip drip
… ‘til they're just pink puddles on the floor
May it happen now, just as we are prayin’
May they drip onto the floor and flow off down the drain
Then we’ll be exempt from the things that tempt
And free from every sta-in
My it happen now, just as we are singing’
As mortal encumberance away we’re flingin’
Then we’ll all mount up as eagles winging’
This is heaven and we know the way in
May it happen now, to we who are believin'
That at this very moment we are all receivin'
The answer to the problem that did Adam and Eve in
This is what we say
Spiritual is good! we celebrate it
Flesh is loathsome! how we hate it
Wonder why God did create it?
We'll ask Him some day
('til then we'll go...)...
