Track 7.
Reginald

Reginald believed the Bible, every single line
except for the bit they got the wrong way round
about the water turning into wine
Reginald believed in Adam and Eve and 4004 BC
When they were created at nine in the morning
On the 5th of February (although some said nine thirty)

Reginald believed all discipline had been ordained by God
He never dared to spare a child, lest he should spoil the rod
Reginald believed all women should be stoned
Who tempt men to things impure
And then maybe those who didn’t should be stoned as well
Because, he said, you never can be sure
(in this world, you never really can be sure)

Behold the men in suits of grey
Who bring chill to a summer day
Free from error in their ways
They face down the devil’s wiles
Behold the holy residue
The last in line, the chosen few
Each one frozen to their pew
In the church of the god who never smiles

Its Thursday night study on the fate of the unsaved
He rejoices he’s been given the power to discern
Stoking up the boiler down in the chapel basement
Stares out through the casement, and he ponders
how Methodists would burn...

Reginald believes in fellowship with those who are of like mind
Two in Leeds, one in Kent, one in Stornoway
That’s all that he can find
There upon his wooden upright chair, straight-backed in the night
He types their weekly magazine, two colours, black on white
(it’s a cold and lonely comfort, being right)
