Track 11.
Holy Places

When I was young I would go wandering all through the countryside
I came upon three travellers there and by me they did ride
On was a prince of high renown, one was a priest, one was a clown
They told me they were going down
To see the Holy Places

I said now I will leave my home and join your pilgrim band
And wander through the world with you, to find this other land
The prince said I must heed his rule, the priest said I should go to school
The clown said I must be a fool
To see the Holy Places

The Prince said one thing I have learned, that God gives power and might
He gives the rich their treasures here, he gives the strong their right
Dominion and the iron hand, authority across the land,
To pay the high price he demands
To see the Holy Places

The Priest said you must come to me, sit at my feet and learn
Of Heaven where you may find delight or Hell where you may burn
God give me the clearest sight, only I can guard the light
Only I can give the right
To see the Holy Places

The Clown spoke softly ‘friend beware the voice of human pride...
Riches, power, religion too, are places men may hide
Cast aside all such disguise, open your heart open your eyes
to grace that floods the earth and skies
you’ll see the Holy Places

I’m still on this journey now, I am still a rover
I soon will reach that riverbank and then I must pass over
Crossing to the other side, I’ll find the gate thrown open wide
The clown waits there to be my guide
And we’ll see the Holy Places
