Track 12.
I'm Grateful

For the sap within the wood, the strength within the stone
The blood within the vein, the marrow in the bone
The root within the soil, nurturing the growing blade
The fearful and the wonderful way that everything is made
For the howling of the wind and the singing of the birds
For the hundred thousand questions whose answers are not words
The gravity that holds us down, the circling of the sky overhead
The strange and the familiar, the mystery and the wonder and the dread

There’s nothing you can do, nothing you can say
nothing you can offer, nothing you can pay
Just be grateful, be grateful...

From taste and sight and scent and sound I have no need to hide
Or escape from this evolved ape my spirit lives inside
For gender warm and tender, the beauty and the passion giving voice
For my physics, biology and chemistry, and the way they can make me rejoice
For my eyes are wide with wonder and my senses overload
With genes and chromosomes and all the mystery of the code
There’s too much for any one mind to contain or control
In the signature of the Creator written on each individual soul

All of history is a landscape, it’s a palimpsest of time
Where many wrote before us and we still can read their lines
Weakness, wit and wisdom when it’s earth and stone make the words
You must listen or you’ll miss a thousand voices crying to be heard
For light reflected in the water, truth reflected in a tale
For music, song and poetry, and even when they all fail
For love and peace and mercy and the silence that is sweeter than all sound
The hand of man that reaches up, the hand of grace that reaches down

For all that has been done for me that I could never do
That sharp split second moment that the truth comes breaking through
I take time out and I step outside, I take time out and step outside of time
In Sacrament and substance, blood and water, bread and wine
But now it’s the echo of my footsteps and the beating of my heart
On this long slow uphill roadway for a while we all must part
Where the mind is tired and weary and the body is broken and sore
But up ahead I see a light, shining out under God’s door
